Slimming wires

What are slimming wires?

Slimming wires are a weight loss method that can help with compulsive overeating and obesity. It is a jaw wiring apparatus in which orthodontic brackets are attached to the teeth with a wire wrapped around or through brackets.

The brackets and wires are arranged in a way that positions the lower jaw in a semi-closed, partially movable resting position. This position restricts jaw movement amount, thereby preventing the consumption of solid foods.

The procedure

It takes about 40 minutes to complete jaw wiring. At the beginning of the procedure, we will clean the teeth. Next, the brackets are attached to both the upper and lower teeth. A thin wire is then used to connect the brackets and hold the lower and upper jaws in place. The lower and upper teeth do not touch each other; they are wired to leave a space between them.

Diet to follow after the procedure

Patients that undergo jaw wiring should stay away from solid foods. Instead, patients should follow a liquid diet. This must be carefully managed and designed to ensure proper nutrition. Proper nutrition involves getting enough carbohydrates, macronutrients, micronutrients, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals, and a sufficient intake of calories. We advise consulting a nutritionist who can advise on a diet plan that will meet your nutritional and weight loss needs.
